After traveling the world and winning accolades at over 40 film festivals, director Gaurav Madan's directorial debut Barah By Barah is all set to release in cinemas across India on May 24. It is one of the rare Indian films shot on 16mm film, set in the heart of Varanasi, offering a unique and stunning perspective of the ancient city through the lens of the only surviving death photographer.

Gaurav recalls meeting a real-life photographer during a trip to Varanasi and finding "immense cinematic potential" in the subject. The film was critically promoted on the festival circuit as an atmospheric, visually stunning and nuanced representation of “traditionalism in conflict with modernity”.

It had its world/India premiere at IFFK, Kerala and its international premiere at the Shanghai International Film Festival. It won major awards at several film festivals including FIPRESCI India (Grand Prix, Best Film), Pune International Film Festival (Best Director) and Diorama IFF (Best Indian Feature Film). The film has a powerhouse star cast including Gyanendra Tripathi (TVF's Half CA), Geetika Vidya Ohlyan (Netflix's Sony), Harish Khanna (Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 12th Failure), Bhumika Dubey (Motichoor Chaknachoor, Your Honor), Akash Sinha and others are included.

"I am from a small town called Jagadhri in Haryana. My parents had to leave our ancestral home because the government decided to widen the adjacent highway. The house collapsed before my eyes and we were forced to live in a dreary dwelling. Colony. Now, the whole city looks deserted, like a clone of a big city.
