Natural disaster movies are, for many, a great form of entertainment. Although destruction, uncertainty, and chaos are common elements in them, a large part of the public is attracted to enjoying, on the big screen, stories where society is at total risk. In 1996, Tornado became a benchmark for this type of film, but in 2024, an independent sequel will arrive with the intention of scaring everyone. What is it about?

Kate Cooper is a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years. Now she studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. Her friend Javi lures her back to the open plains to test out an innovative new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens, the charming and reckless social media superstar who enjoys posting his storm-chasing adventures. To him, the more dangerous, the better.

As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never before seen will be unleashed. Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the path of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

Cast and crew

Two rising talents star in this highly anticipated and exciting film. Daisy Edgar-Jones ( The Wild One ) and Glen Powell ( Everyone But You ) take on the lead roles of Kate and Tyler, respectively. Joining them are Anthony Ramos ( The Neighbourhood ), David Corenswet (star of the upcoming Superman: Legacy ), Brandon Perea ( Nope !), Daryl McCormack ( Peaky Blinders ) and Maura Tierney ( Beautiful Boy ).

The film is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, who surprised everyone three years ago with Minari, a film that earned him two Oscar nominations (Best Director and Best Original Screenplay). The script is by Mark L. Smith, who has earned critical acclaim for his work on The Revenant and Operation Overlord. Photography is by South African Dan Mindel, an expert in big-budget productions ( John Carter, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ).

What can we expect from the film?

The trailer clearly shows us a spectacular level of destruction and disaster. The visual effects look promising, as does the sound design. In a way, the film is very reminiscent of the original Tornado , and although many expected to see a sequel with the descendants of its protagonists, the truth is that we should be prepared for something new, but with the same essence.
